Clockwork

The Beginning

The rain fell in sheets against the cobblestone streets of Neo-London. It was the kind of rain that soaked you to the bone in seconds, a relentless deluge that washed away the grime of the city only to replace it with a slick, dangerous sheen.

Elara pulled her coat tighter around herself, shivering as a gust of wind cut through the fabric. She shouldn't be here. Not tonight. Not when the Guild was patrolling.

But the letter had been specific. 'Midnight. The old clock tower. Come alone.'

She looked up at the towering structure, its face obscured by the fog. The hands were frozen at 11:55, as they had been for fifty years. A monument to a time before the Great Silence.

Pushing open the heavy oak door, she stepped inside. The air was thick with the smell of dust and old oil. Gears the size of houses loomed in the darkness, silent and still.

"You came," a voice echoed from the shadows.

Elara froze. "Show yourself."

A figure stepped into the pale moonlight filtering through a shattered window. He was tall, wearing a long coat that had seen better days. But it was his eyes that caught her attention. They glowed with a faint, blue luminescence.

"I didn't think you'd actually come," he said, a crooked smile playing on his lips.

"I need answers," Elara replied, her hand drifting to the hidden pocket where she kept her dagger. "About my father."

The stranger laughed, a dry, humorless sound. "Your father? He's the reason the clock stopped, Elara. He's the reason we're all in this mess."

Elara's heart pounded in her chest. "Liar."

"Am I?" He took a step closer. "Ask yourself why you've never seen a clock that works. Why time itself seems broken."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, golden object. It was a pocket watch, ticking rhythmically. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.

Elara stared at it, mesmerized. It was the most beautiful sound she had ever heard.

"This," the stranger whispered, "is the key. And you are the only one who can wind it."
